Heart-rate variability has been used as an important marker of the aut-onpmic functions. However, knowledge of computer programming is required for conducting the spectral analysis of heart-rate variability. To overcome such an obstruction, we developed a web-based analysis program. Our system can be used by those who know how to operate a web browser such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer. The user accessed our server site (http://fn90.ams.kobe-u.ac.jp/) and received the data-input form by their web browser. The user filled in the form with a series of R-R interval values and submitted to the server. At the server side, spectral analysis of heart rate variability was performed and a JPEG-compressed image file consisting of graphs of power spectrum and some numeric indexes for diagnosis is generated. At the client side, the browser displayed the image file. The overhead arising from communication was 3 to 30 seconds depending on the data transfer rate. To evaluate the usefulness of our system, we test operated the system. A remote user who accessed the server through telephone line could analyze the data for 30 times within a period of 30 minutes. It indicates that the communication overhead is acceptable and our system can satisfy the remote users.
