抄録	Two recent studies that systematically examined the number of published papers in English language journals by Japanese medical school researchers show a new wave of western influence of peer evaluation among Japanese reserchers. This article analyzed the characteristics of traditional Japanese culture and its relationship to the quality of scientific research and writing. It is suggested that the development of intellectual community is vital in achieving excellence in scientific research and writing among Japanese scholars.
