Although a large number of studies have been conducted on vocabulary acquisition, little is known about the acquisition of phrasal verbs. In recognition of this need, the present study focused on the acquisition of English phrasal verbs by Japanese EFL learners. Subjects were 36 female university students majoring in English. They were divided into three groups and were presented with five tasks to learn phrasal verbs, each task requiring different levels of processing. The stimuli were 10 separable phrasal verbs and 10 inseparable phrasal verbs. Each group tackled different tasks and the researcher controlled the number of repetitions. In addition, all of them undertook two kind of tests—the gap-fill test and a True/False test—to measure whether how many phrasal verbs they had learned. A retest followed one week after learning. Groups that were required to undertake deep processing and given a lot of information gained high scores in the gap-fill test and retained a lot of phrasal verbs until the second week. Moreover, the group that tackled the exercise gained the highest scores in this experiment. The research proved that repetition, deep processing and task variation promoted the acquisition of phrasal verbs and long-term memory. In conclusion, this study recommends that learners and teachers apply these elements to their learning.
