Safety design and planning issues of railway platform for visual impaired passengers

After Constitution of the Barrier-free Act for Transportation Facilities or Architectural Buildings, public opinion pushed to develop and realize the safety design and planning for people with special needs to move without hitch. A railway platform without sliding fences or home—doors and less information environment seems to have high risk of falling accidents for visual impaired people. Some research results are warning that falling accidents at stations are often observed among blind and weak eyed passengers. Though it is effective to avoid falling accidents from the platform to install home—doors or sliding fences, it is far from wholly improving even in near future because of various reasons. Actually, in town or in facilities, the visually impaired now have to follow instruction marks such as raised point floor blocks which had been originally developed in Japan. Through individual interview research against visual impaired students and teachers, this study aims to clarify how blind or weak eyed people feel a lot of troubles as railway passengers and we also focused to raised blocks laid on platforms. Finally we discussed what we should improve to realize safety built environment at railway stations based on opinions from sight impaired users with special needs.
