This study reports the results of a lexical analysis and measurement of real-time response latencies in the spontaneous speech of Japanese EFL learners who participated in a short-term (three week) overseas study tour. Thirty-four subjects took Versant for English, Spoken English Test, developed by Harcourt/Ordinate Corporation before and after the study tour. This test evaluated the ability of test-takers to understand spoken English and express themselves clearly and appropriately in English. We analyzed the speech data (Versant for English, Part E: Open Questions) in terms of (1) word frequency, and (2) word familiarity. The results are discussed in terms of cognitive processing in speech production by Japanese EFL learners and teaching implications.
