Assessment of L2 English Learner Utterances in Persuasion Roleplays : Consideration of the Relationship between Assessment Indices and Identification of Learner Samples Linked to Particular Speech Styles

Using the data from the ICNALE Global Rating Archives (Ishikawa, 2020 )), this study examined the ratings that 65 raters assigned to the utterances of 140 participants consisting of Asian L2 English learners as well as English native speakers during the persuasion roleplays. Analytical foci were put on (1) the relationship between 13 kinds of assessment indices (10 kinds of analytical assessment scores, a holistic assessment score, an analytical assessment score sum, and an overall rating score), (2) statistical loadings of the analytical assessment indices , and (3) identification of the speech samples representing different speech styles. The quantitative analyses showed that (1’) 13 indices were divided into two , which are related to language-oriented speeches in which speakers pay attention to the linguistic quality of their speeches and content-oriented speeches in which they pay attention to logicality and purposefulness in their speeches and show more willingness to communicate and intention to involve hearers ; (2’) roughly the same loadings were given to different analytical assessment indices; and (3’) four speech styles were identified, which were observed more clearly in the speeches of EFL learners at novice and lower intermediate levels .
