Metonymy in Daily Language Use

Metonymy is a cognitive process in which one conceptual entity, the source element, provides mental access to another conceptual entity, the target element, within the same conceptual frame. The field of classical rhetoric has proposed several versions of the typology of this “stand for” relationship of metonymy including relationships such as author for work, producer for product, container for a thing contained, garment for person, location for person, location for institution, part for the whole, and others. However, when the typology in rhetoric is applied to authentic examples from communication in the real world beyond clichés in rhetoric textbooks, it is far from comprehensive. This paper provides more than 100 examples of metonymy in Japanese from daily language use such as in conversations, broadcasts, newspapers, magazines, novels, essays, lyrics, blogs, reviews, and social networking sites including YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. Classifying source elements of the examples into 23 types, we demonstrate that the current typology in rhetoric covers only limited kinds of metonymy. Previous theoretical studies of metonymy have largely been grounded on a limited range of empirical data, and the examples cited in this article may become a touchstone from which to measure the applicability of the general theory of metonymy.
