This study aims to investigate the use of ChatGPT among Chinese language learners at four Japanese universities (Osaka University, Osaka Metropolitan University, Kansai University, and Kobe University) and to elucidate learners’ attitudes toward ChatGPT. Two questionnaire surveys were conducted using Google Forms. Participants completed Questionnaire 1, and only those who responded affirmatively to Question 3 proceeded to complete Questionnaire 2. The findings of the survey analysis are as follows: Although ChatGPT is widely recognized, only a small proportion of learners (5.6%) have utilized it to address challenges in learning Chinese. Several factors contributed to this low usage rate, yet over half of the learners exhibited positive attitudes toward learning how to utilize ChatGPT. Among respondents to Questionnaire 2, 58.3% reported using ChatGPT for translation purposes. However, few learners directly adopt answers generated by ChatGPT; instead, they tend to evaluate the content before incorporating it into their learning. Despite the availability of ChatGPT, Chinese language learners still feel the need to learn a foreign language and do not view the emergence of ChatGPT as rendering human language learning and acquisition obsolete.
