A Study of Strategies for Translating Culture-Specific Items in the Japanese Subtitles of Chinese Film “Forever Enthralled”

This paper examines the translation strategies of Culture-Specific Items (CSI) in subtitles, making a contrastive study of Japanese and English subtitles in the Chinese film “Forever Enthralled”. I aim to identify from their strategic differences what skopos (= translation purpose) translators set. Previous studies have offered an analytical framework based on two categories: source-oriented strategies and target-oriented strategies. In order to more precisely analyze the strategies, I have introduced two levels (strongness / weakness) into the previous framework: strong source-oriented, weak source-oriented, weak target-oriented and strong target-oriented. The result found that the target-oriented strategies are consistently fundamental to the two subtitles; however, Japanese subtitles are combined with both weak and strong target-oriented strategies while English subtitles almost consist of weak target-oriented strategies. In terms of audiences’ accessibility, the two subtitles seemingly own the common skopos, ‘recreation’. Interestingly, the Japanese subtitles shows ‘biographical’ side, emphasizing the factinspired story. On the contrary, English subtitles concentrate on informational ‘symmetry’ to the original Chinese ones. These findings suggest the existence of subskopos separately from primary skopos. This means that in the skopos theory only one skopos is thought to exist, but in practice it turns out that skopos is comprised of a multiplicity.
