Gentamicin (abbreviated hereinafter to GM) has been reported to have a potent antimicrobial activity against gram-negatives, especially E. coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas and Proteus. We examined gentamicin sensitivity of organisms isolated in our laboratories during one year from September 1972 to August 1973. One thousand five hundred and ninety-nine strains of gram-positives and 2,960 strains of gram-negatives were selected, and the disk method was applied throughout the study. Among them 272 strains were randomly selected for measuring MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration). The data of the study revealed that: the gram-positives displayed high sensitivity to GM (the incidence of sensitivity was as high as 82.0 per cent for all the strains tested) except for Streptococcus faecalis, and in most cases, a significantly higher sensitivity than to other chemotherapeutic agents. Ninety-two per cent of all the strains were represented by E. coli, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Enterobacter and Proteus. These gram-negatives were all highly sensitive, and significantly more sensitive than to CL (Colistin), KM (Kanamycin) or AB-PC (Ampicillin). Moreover, gentamicin is superior to the other chemotherapeutic agents tested in respect to the range of MIC in all but a few exceptional cases.
