ln immunological reactions the antigen uptaken by phagocytes may bear an important role in the antybody production by lymphocytes. To elucidate the mechanism, the observation was made on lymph nodes after secondary antigen stimulation in the animals previously sensitized with Freund's adjuvant containing bovine serum albumin with special reference to the macrophages and the immune cells using an electron microscope. The secondary reaction was characterized by an intense phagocytosis of the antigen protein of mature phagocytes. Degeneration and destruction of some of the mature phagocytes were observed after a comparatively early stages. About this stage, immunoblasts were increased, then followed by a proliferation of plasma cells. Exactly at this stage, immature phagocytes came to appear in parenchyma of the lymph nodes. Along with the maturation of these cells, they changed to stimulating phagocytes. These cells then took up antigen protein, gradually transformed into ingesting phagocytes. Scarcely any reaction of fixed reticulum cells was noted after antigen stimulus. Consequently the fixed reticulum cells do not probably represent the origin of the immature phagocytes seen in the early period following antigen challenge.
