Experimental cutaneous calcinosis induced in the rat by topical calciphylaxis (Selye) was investigated histologically, histochemically and autoradiographically. Calcification in rat skin sensitized by oral administration of dihydrotachysterol occurred within 1 to 3 days after subcutaneous injection of ferric chloride. In the earlier stages of calcinosis, the presence of hyaluronic acid was confirmed histochemically and high activities of alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase and ATPase were also observed. In the latter stages of calcinosis, chondroitin sulfate was found to be increased.
