The cryoprotective effect of dextran, glycerol and dimethyl sulfoxide was compared on kidney tissue. The author perfused cat's kidney in vivo with cold artificial solution and administered cryoprotective additives through vascular system. Tangential slices of the kidney were frozen and thawed under various possibly regulated rates of freezing and thawing, and the effect of cryoprotective agents were evaluated by oxygen uptake and photomicrographs of fixed and stained tissue. The results obtained showed the least damage in the tissue at slow rate of freezing and thawing. Dextran showed cryoprotective effect only in case of slow rate. With regard to dimethyl sulfoxide high protective effect was observed on an average for slow, rapid and ultrarapid freezing and thawing. Glycerol showed, in general, marked protective effect especially at slow and fast rate treatment.
