ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC STUDIES ON THE PHAGOCYTOSIS OF EHRLICH ASCITES TUMOR CELLS

The purpose of this study was to investigate the phagocytosis of the pigment of benzidine yellow series by Ehrlich ascites tumor cells. The pigment emulsions were aseptically injected intraperitoneally into normal mature female mice on 4th and 5th day after preliminary intraperitoneal inoculation of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells. On the 7th day after tumor transplantation ascites cells were obtained, fixed in osmic acide, dehydrated with alcohol, embedded in Methacrylate or Epon 812 and serial ultra thin sections of these materials were observed with the electron microscope. The administered pigment particles congregated in granules which were scattered within the cytoplasm of the Ehrlich ascites tumor cells at several sites. Almost pigment granules were surrounded by a single layer of limiting membrane. The phagocytized pigment particles were digested as time went on, and some times the granules became similar to microbody or mitochondria with double membrane structure. These results suggest the mechanism of phagocytosis and digestion of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells.
