The Grammar of ‘Reportative Mood’ Revisited

This paper clarifies the ambiguous distinction between direct and indirect report in Japanese, moving beyond traditional author/quoter-centred analyses. Leveraging Sadanobu’s ‘ecological perspective’ (here-now-I-real) and ‘conversational space’ (here-now-we-real), we redefine reportative mood based on a quoted clause’s adherence to the current conversational space or another space like the quoter’s mind. Direct speech, existing outside the current conversational space, readily accommodates affective language and personal experience with interjection or final particles, while indirect speech, conforming to the current space, suppresses it, implying quoter’s epistemological state. The concept of kyara further influences interpretation on reportative mood. This framework allows for a more precise and reproducible analysis of Japanese reportative mood, offering new insights into the act of ‘telling’ in narratives.
