This study examines the current state and challenges of applied linguistics research in Japan, analyzing its academic positioning both domestically and globally. While applied linguistics has established itself as an independent field internationally, Japanese applied linguistics research has yet to fully consolidate its identity and scholarly influence. Through an examination of external and internal factors affecting its development, this paper highlights key issues such as the lack of unified theoretical frameworks, the dominance of language education research, and the absence of an integrated academic platform for researchers across subfields. In addressing these challenges, the paper proposes three strategic approaches: (1) establishing overarching research themes that can connect diverse subfields, (2) fostering applied linguistics curators who facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, and (3) implementing model projects that demonstrate the practical and societal impact of applied linguistics research. These initiatives aim to create a more cohesive and internationally recognized research community in Japan. By offering a critical analysis of the structural issues facing Japanese applied linguistics, this study provides a foundation for discussions on its future directions. It emphasizes the need for increased academic integration, theoretical consolidation, and enhanced global engagement to ensure the sustained development of applied linguistics in Japan.
