This paper examines how dance and accompanying music of chigo-bugaku , the folk dance repertoire performed by chigo or ‘children of festivity,’ have changed by contacting the imperial bugaku tradition after the late 19th century. The bugaku is the dance repertoire of the imperial court music gagaku and can date back to the eighth century. It however spread into local provinces in the medieval and pre-modern times and became folk tradition. The folk bugaku dance especially performed by chigo boys as an offering to Buddha or deities in local festivals of shrines or temples is called chigo-bugaku . Currently the chigo-bugaku traditions can be found in Yamagata, Niigata, Toyama, Shimane, and Shizuoka prefectures. However, their appearances are different from each other because they transformed in different ways in the process of being passed down over hundreds of years in each region. As a result, they maintain similarities with the court bugaku only in titles of music and dance costumes today. Among the chigo-bugaku traditions, the example of Shizuoka-sengen-jinja (SSJ) deserves special attention. They had lost the connection with the court musicians for hundreds of years but regained it when five former gagaku musicians migrated into Shizuoka at the beginning of the Meiji period (around 1869). The contact with professional gagaku musicians encouraged local people to ‘correct’ the style of chigobugaku to the imperial one. This paper has clarified that today’s chigo-bugaku of SSJ, if compared with other chigo-bugaku traditions in the vicinity, has become much closer to the authentic imperial style in terms of music and dance and has removed some folk religious elements from dance gestures. The paper has also revealed a gap between local people and outside folklorists in the recognition of the art, which became apparent in the process of designating it as a cultural property; the former claims the closeness to the imperial court tradition and the latter places more value on the local unique features.
