Gilles Deleuze presented the idea of a philosophy of difference in a review he wrote for Jean Hippolyte’s study of Hegel, Logic and Existence . Hippolyte’s interpretation of Hegel is characterized by his consideration of Hegel’s philosophy as the selfdevelopment of the universal "logos" of Being, or Absolute. Therefore, Hippolyte believed that philosophy should be developed in the medium of language, not in the senses. What makes such logical development in language possible is the principle of negativity, and dialectical method that is neither poetry nor mathematics. In this dialectic, difference means negativity, which is opposed to identity and contradicts it. However, Deleuze, on the other hand, based his philosophy on difference without negativity, in other words, positive difference, and built a higher empiricism that escapes the logic of dialectics. The decision to construct a philosophical system in a way different to Hippolyte’s Hegelianism was the birth point of Deleuze’s philosophy.
