Sugar was one of the most important industries at the beginning of the Japanese rule, and Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan interfered and directed the development of the sugar industry with the power of the state. As a result of Office of the Governor-General of Taiwan’s protection of the sugar industry and incentives for private immigrants, sugar companies actively set up sugar factories and also recruited Japanese people to establish Japanese immigrant villages in Taiwan for the production of sugarcane, one of which was Asahi Village (in the present-day Fengli area, Taitung City). In general, these private sugar immigrant villages did not do well, and lives for the Japanese immigrants at that time were quite difficult. However, the business condition of Asahi Village seemed to have been better than that of other private sugar immigrant villages in Taito Prefecture. Although there have been many studies on Japanese agricultural immigrant villages in Taiwan, there are few studies that focus on the personal histories of Japanese immigrants. Therefore, this paper focuses on the personal history of the leader of Asahi Village, Kouichiro Tamura, by using historical sources such as the Taiwan Daily News, and then examines how Kouichiro Tamura positively influenced the operation of Asahi Village. As a result, the importance of conducting case studies from the perspective of key figures in the study of the history of Japanese immigration to Taiwan can be understood from this paper.
