A Case Study of Familiar Chronic Pancreatitis : Significance of the Psychological Approach

The patient was a 22-year-old male. He underwent the operation of familiar chronic pancreatitis. Later, his exocrine pancreatic function gradually recovered. But there was still a possibility for pancreatic replacement. Therefore, on one side was a need to reduce his stress and on the other side was a need to control his blood sugar throughout his life, because his endocrine pancreatic function was on the border line. Taking this into consideration, the authors analyzed his nursing process, and examined the significance of the psychological approach. The results were summarized as follows : ( 1 ) His ambulation was promoted, the number of the use of anodyne decreased, and his behavior of dependence was dissolved. The authors considered that these evidences contributed to his recovery. ( 2 ) The authors found that his psychological changes under the conditions of his life and his attitude of receiving our treatment were influenced by his emotional experience in his infancy. ( 3 ) His emotional experience to his father was modified by our interviews and his relation to his father greatly improved. ( 4 ) The patient found that his psychological stability was obtained by this treatment. As a result, the patient came to behave himself with less stress. ( 5 ) The patient came to have a hope in his future, and his mental attitude became favorable for his health care. From these results, the authors consider that this psychological approach is very important to deal with the patient with sustained stress.
