Evaluation of the Functional Difference between Dominant and Nondominant Hands by Electromyographic Analysis

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional difference between dominant and nondominant hands. The subjects consisted of 3 normal males and 7 normal females (26.2 ± 7.6 years old). The integrated electromyography (IEMG) was obtained from wrist - fin¬ger flexors and extensors during picking up the 3 kinds of objects with chopsticks, picking up the 3 kinds of objects with fingers and writing. The results obtained were as follows : 1) during picking up with chopsticks, the IEMG from flexors and extensors was significant¬ly higher in the nondominant hand than in the dominant one ; 2) during picking up with fin¬gers and writing, the IEMG of extensors showed significantly greater values in the nondomi¬nant hand than in the dominant one, but no significant difference was found in the flexors between the dominant hand and the nondominant one.
