A Case Study of the Patient who Complains of the Fear of Eye-to-Eye Confrontation

A patient reported here was a 21-year-old male with a fear of eyeto-eye confrontation. He was obsessed by the fear of his unintentional staring at people with strange looks and could not contact with people on the eye-to-eye basis. He was hospitalized for Morita therapy, but was referred to an occupational therapist for better treatment after unsuccessful trial of Morita therapy for 2 months. The reference aimed at the improvement of a man-to-man relationship. Considering the life history of his pre-adolescence when he must learn social norms for acceptance and rejection, the author took the role of a play-mate. Tennis, Chinese chess, and TV games were played once a week, for better communication with the patient. As a result, the patient could enjoy those activities, and began to com¬municatie with the author comfortably, and finally the fear of the eye contact disappeared. He was discharged and has successfully adjusted to his family life. It is concluded that oc¬cupational therapy was necessary to make the patient get along with other persons.
