A Study of Evaluation of Motor Responses in Patients with Acute Brain Damage

The best motor response of Glasgow Coma Scale is classified into grade II (withdrawal reflex) and grade III (reactive extensor postural synergy) by motor patterns, while Brunnstom's stage II —V are determined by patterns and quantities of motor responses. On the contrary, Brunnstrom's stage categorizes reacive extensor postural synergy into movement pattern of extensor synergy. To study predictive criteria for the improvement of motor function in patients with acute brain damage, we examined 29 patients in the second week and the fourth week after their onset by the response and Brunnstrom's recovery stage. The subjects ranging in age from 17 to 80 years were selected with cerebral hemorrahage and infarction, the rupture of aneurysm and head trauma with brain hemorrhage. About 90% of them showed either naught or one graded improvement in the best motor response on the second week. Since the best motor response is associated with the Brunnsrom's stage in evaluation of motor recovery in the acute stage of the brain-damaged patients, it might be one of useful assessments as a predictive criterion of their motor function.
