Tourist History in Postwar Aizu

The defeat of Japan in 1945 brought a senous identity crisis to Japanese people, especially the people of Aizu, who were at the height of their prosperity as the center of Japanese militarism in the early 1940s. This paper argues what the defeated people in postwar Aizu did to restore their identity. That is also the attempt to ask about the truth of "tourist history", which became the basis of the postwar Aizu identity, and to explain the current situation of Aizu. In postwar Japan victims of war tended to be forgotten completely. Yet, at the same time, the people still kept interest for the dead . It was the Boshin Civil War in 1868, rather than World War II that people remember in postwar Aizu. After 1945, Aizu-Waka matsu City has developed as a tourist city based on the history of the Boshin Civil War and the Byakko-tai troops. Then they required the storyteller of "history". MIYAZAKI Tomihachi (宮崎十三八, 1925-1996) can be regarded as the key person of the storytelling which was often called "tourist history". Miyazaki told the "history" which contributed to the development of Aizu-Wakamatsu as a tourist city. On the other hand, his "tourist history" has another aspect. He emphasized the tragic and unsolved death of Aizu people killed in the Boshin Civil War. He found another way to solve the bitterness in Buddhist culture and temples in the Aizu region. Now all the war dead are being forgotten. The forgotten war dead causes the crisis of Aizu identity which needs memories of the war dead. This crisis is not only the case of postwar Aizu. This argument mentioned above can be applied to contemporary Japan and other nation states.
