This paper examines some aspects of Hoo Hap Hwee Semarang, a Chinese community association located in Semarang, capital city of Central-Java Province of Indonesia. Hoo Hap Hwee Semarang is one of few Chinese community associations which have survived almost a century of modern-contemporary Indonesian history. Thus changes of the association are supposed to be reflecting the changes of political, economic, and cultural environments surrounding Chinese communities in Indonesia. Part 1 reviews the early history of Hoo Hap Hwee Semarang. It was originally a Canton immigrants based association named Kong Gie Siang, but reorganized under the influence of Hoo Hap Hwee in Surabaya and open the door to the all immigrants and offsprings of Chinese descent. It gained independence from Surabaya in 1923. Part 2 analyzes the "Chinese origin" aspect in Hoo Hap Hwee Semarang's identity, especially of Hong Bun, a coalition of Chinese Secret Societies that emerged at the late era of Ching Dynasty. Part 3 points out another aspect of Hoo Hap Hwee, i.e., the orientation towards "modernization" of the association as well as Chinese community as a whole. Such aspect is seen in discourses of the leaders, their profiles, and the fact that Hoo Hap Hwee obtained juridical person's status to be recognized in the framework of modern colonial rule by the Dutch.
