This paper attempts to study the mental hygiene movement and its influence on the education in US. In this study, the author investigates into Adolf Meyer’s mental hygiene th eory and educational discourse. Firstly, the goal of psychiatry to reform the society better made family and school the main battlefield. Then, according to Meyer, the main cause of mental disorder was habit disorganization, which was due to the environment, such as family and school. The family was not only a hygiene institution, but also ‘the institution of reciprocal education’. Finally, through analyzing of Meyer’s educational opinion, School must be a place for the healthy growth of as well as habit development of Children. In conclusion, Meyer’s mental hygiene theory rehashed the traditional theory of ‘habit formation’. Habit formation was used again as a way of prevention and treatment. The setting goal was to help people adjust to the society. Therefore, the study offers the clue to understand the ‘medicalization’ in today's education.
