This paper outlines the attempt to conduct a remote lesson via the internet between a German class at Kobe University and a Japanese class at University of Hamburg. The two groups of learners participated in a language exchange in their own classrooms through a method called “tandem” using the freeware skypeTM. There was a difference in number and proficiency between the two groups, e.g., thirty two German learners of Japanese were about B1 to B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages （CEFR） （intermediate）, and twenty four Japanese learners of German were less than A1 （beginner）. Diverse difficulties caused from the differences of time-zone, number of participants, level of proficiency, and learners’ interests are reported and some efforts to overcome such difficulties and to conduct more effective remote lessons are described.
