In this paper, the author examines the process and features of Japanese literature’s translation in Vietnam through historical periods from the perspective of Polysystem theory. Although Vietnam and Japan are both belong to kanji-bunkaken (the cultural zone of China) and the first Japanese novel was translated into Vietnamese in 1913, the number of Japanese literary works is still small comparing with that of other foreign literature in Vietnam. Moreover, until the 1990s, most of them were translated indirectly, through an intermediary language such as Chinese, French, Russian, or English. To explain that phenomenon, it is necessary to reconfirm the status of Japanese literature in close relation with Vietnamese socio-cultural background as well as in relation with other foreign literature. Moreover, Even-Zohar’s “polysystem is conceived as a heterogeneous, hierarchized conglomerate (or system) of systems[...] it follows that polysystems can be postulated to account for phenomena existing on various levels, so that the polysystem of a given national literature is viewed as one element making up the larger socio-cultural polysystem” (Shuttleworth, 2009). With that in mind, this paper applies the Polysystem theory’s approach to investigating the historical and literary factors that affect the translation of Japanese literature at two levels—in the whole system of literature of Vietnam and in the system of translated literature of Vietnam. As a result, we will see how the Vietnamese history with sharp changes has had a strong impact on the tendency of translating Japanese literature in Vietnam. Additionally, the reasons for which Japanese literature remains a peripheral part in the translation literature system of Vietnam, and therefore to be influenced by the translation literature at the central place, will be clarified.
