Although Sasayama district, so called 'Taki-Plateau', has aroused interest in the insect-fauna by reason of not only being a basin 200 meters above the sea-level but also surrounded by the mountains 500-700 meters high, no extensive work has up to the present been published and the district remains as a dark area of the Jpanese fauna. But recent works on the fauna of the adjacent district, Hikami, by Mr. Y. Yamamoto included some interesting insects. To fulfil this scientific gap, the author has every effort to collect and rear some sawflies and horntails since 1952. In the present paper the author reports a list of the fauna of Symphyta, surely identified as 132 species of 71 genera, which includes a new species. In addition to the list some important biological notes are given. Most of these specimens are preserved in the Entomological Laboratory of Hyogo University of Agriculture. Before going further the author wishes to express his heartiest thanks to Professor K. Iwata for his kind guidance, to Dr. K. Takeuchi for his kind help in identification and to many students who collected many valuable materials.
