Gag as 'Transformation' : The Relationship between the Disguise Gag and Context in I Love Lucy

This paper focuses on the gags in which Lucy, the main character of I Love Lucy (CBS 1951-1957), disguises herself as other people or changes her personality by wearing different clothes. The present paper considers the characteristics and the functions of these “disguise gags” with relevance to the protagonist’s situation and the plot of the episode. Lucy is always placed in two kinds of situations: the “general situation” (a basic framework or setting that a protagonist is placed in for the whole program) and the “particular situation” (a specific framework or setting a protagonist is placed in for an individual episode). Each disguise gag’s type (the kind of disguise Lucy uses) and nature (whether or not Lucy disguises herself as another person or disguises herself as an inanimate object) are decided by these two kinds of situations. While the disguises in I Love Lucy are born from these situations, these gags actually have the ability to change Lucy’s situation itself as the episode progresses. This function can transfer her from oppression to liberation and vice versa. By using Algirdas Julien Greimas’ structuralist method, this paper makes it clear that Lucy not only transforms her personal appearance but her situation as well.
