“Punch and Judy” tends to be regarded as a Victorian glove-puppet show. However, Mr.Punch, its hero, was neither the protagonist of the stage nor a wife-beater at the beginning. He came to England as the Italian Pulcinella in the Restoration period, and became familiar with to the English by inheriting the role of intruder to the script from “the Vice” of medieval morality play. His features as the protagonist of “Punch and Judy” were almost simultaneously developed around the end of eighteenth century, and settled in the oldest dictated text of actual performance in 1828. This period also witnessed an upheaval in England. The decline of pleasure fairs and the emergence of professional “Punchman” made Punch’s show a more flexible and primitive glove-puppet show and a violent drama. Judy appears then, neutralizing Punch’s violence by her resemblance to Punch and her habit of making the first strike. Therefore, Judy’s entry and her role of relativization of Punch to the protagonist of “Punch and Judy” should be regarded as a crucial factor in the development of Punch’s character. Consequently, the dramatic form of “Punch and Judy” started, as an entirely new development of Punch’s story, balancing its subversiveness and tradition.
