This research, focusing on the neologism effected by the suffix “ism(e)”, examines the subtle difference of nuance between French word “lyrisme” and English word “lyricism”, translated always without any distinction in Japanese as “Jojō-sei (抒情性)”. It aims also to clarify the historical circumstances in which was born the difference of nuance among French, English and Japanese. The French word “lyrisme”, coined in the early 19th century, is made by attaching the suffix “isme” to “lyre”, musical instrument which symbolizes traditionally the musicality of the poetry. On the other hand, the English word “lyricism” is created with “lyric” which originated from French “lyrique” but became soon to mean poetry itself or even word of the songs. With such morphological caracteristics, the former is often used in discussing the essence in lyric poetry, while the latter is used rather to criticize the excess of poetic expressions or attitudes which are unnecessary in prose works. In addition, the Japanese word “ririsizumu (リリシズム)”, phonetic translation of “lyricism” introduced in Japanese vocabulary especially by the work of some Japanese writers in the early Showa era, has acquired some other nuances like affectation or immaturity.
