Filming a traditional performing art: a cultural film "Bugaku" produced by Kokusai Bunka Shinkôkai (KBS)

This article examines how the Japanese traditional performing art bugaku dance was documented in a film “Bugaku” produced by Kokusai Bunka Shinkôkai (KBS) in 1939. This film is invaluable in that it is the oldest record of bugaku, imperial court dance of Japan, performed by the imperial dancers and musicians and it tried to present a complete picture of bugaku. This article analyzes visual and audio aspects of the film and clarified the intentions both of the producer and the film director. This film includes two pieces “Ryôô (samai),” solo dance, and “Bairo (umai),” group dance, both abbreviated by editing. Detailed analysis reveals that “Ryôô” has five discontinuations, while “Bairo” only two. This means that “Bairo” is a more faithful representation of its performance. In terms of shooting angles and camera work, “Ryôô” was shot from seven different angles but each shot was fixed. On the other hand, in “Bairo,” the camera is not always fixed and sometimes used panning, tilting, and tracking so that the audience could feel more in tune with the camera’s gaze. The basic method of filming is explained as follows; ‘it employs purely documentary attitude and avoids using too many elaborated techniques, in order to faithfully present the actual choreography.’ However, the primary purpose of this film seems to be to introduce the essence of the dance rather than to document whole performance, since several sections are known to be cut. Thus, the ‘documentary attitude’ in “Bugaku” could be interpreted as ‘relatively documentary’ in that it was not completely faithful to its subject matter.
