This paper addresses the topic of disaster narrative, focusing on stories of disaster as expressed through art. The paper analyzes drawings from the first months of the Popoki Friendship Story Project, a drawing project begun shortly after the March 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear explosions in Northeastern Japan. It describes how drawing can be, on the one hand, an “opportunity” for those who have experienced trauma to examine their experiences as well as their inner thoughts and feelings. At the same time, drawing can also be a “process” for expressing those thoughts and feelings, serving as a vehicle for expressing the complex mix of feelings such as loss, anger and perhaps even hope or joy that arise in the wake of traumatic events. The paper explores the meaning of art in this context, suggesting that it can be an effective tool for those engaged in providing more effective post-disaster support. In addition, the inclusion of narratives expressed through drawing can contribute to a deeper understanding of not only the experience of disaster, but also lead to greater awareness of the implications of having experienced traumatic events. This understanding can help to create societies with more insight as to the implications of disaster, helping them to improve modes of communication and to build resilience.
