「第二言語の言語知識と言語産出の関係性の解明 : 統計的アプローチによる検討（Knowledge and Performance: A Quantitative Analysis of Learners' L2 Use）」（2020 統数研 一般研究2-00007）

This study explores the question of why Japanese high school EFL learners overuse causal conjunction ‘because’ and misuse it frequently without the main clause when expressing reasons for their opinions in their argumentative essays in English. The investigation focuses on the overall use of because clauses including misuse to observe how differently the conjunction behaves in essays by 4 groups of writers: 3 groups from each grader of Japanese high school EFL learners, and English native speakers (ENS) respectively. The data of high school students were obtained from JEFLL corpus, and the ones of ENS were from ICNALE Written essays. The frequency of ‘because’ use, the use at the beginning of the sentence, and each sentence pattern such as ‘SV because SV.’, were extracted and compared by the adjustment frequency. Chi-square tests were performed to confirm the significance of the difference. Correspondence analysis was conducted to sort out the characteristics of each group’s use of sentence patterns. Qualitative analyses provide insights into the way how Japanese EFL learners acquire the use of ‘because’ and what causes the problem of overuse. The findings from close observation of the students’ use compared with that of native speakers have an implication that the difference in the logical pattern in thought between the two languages influences Japanese learners’ misuse of ‘because.’
