The purpose of this paper is to explore the requirements of Japanese language teacher training programs for non-native speakers of Japanese through the investigation of non-native Japanese teachers. Firstly, we carried out an overview of previous research regarding the beliefs for roles and skills/competences of non-native Japanese language teachers. Then, we conducted semi-structured interviews with three Japanese teachers who are teaching in universities overseas. In those interviews, there are four questions regarding beliefs of Japanese language teaching, their own experiences regarding Japanese study and training for Japanese teachers and their needs for training. The data was analyzed by “qualitative content analysis ”. The following results were obtained: We found that the advantages of non-native teachers is their experience of studying Japanese and using the mother language of their learners for confirming and promoting learning. We also found that difficulties for non-native teachers include explanations of synonyms and language use, teaching listening and conversation classes, obtaining the latest information about Japan or Japanese language education and maintaining own Japanese language skills. The results regarding the advantages are consistent with previous research. Although the results regarding their difficulties basically confirm with previous research, it is clear that there are specific points and classes with which they have difficulties. Also, it was found that all of the participants are focusing on how to teach Japanese and they need training for that. In conclusion, we can say that we should include sessions on teaching approaches and methods in training programs, focusing on specific classes or items that present difficulties for non-native teachers.
