Of all the political rulers in the modern era, Hitler was surely the one who placed the greatest importance on the arts. Despite suppressing modernism and the avantgarde as degenerate, he did believe that art was an essential element in creating a national identity and was devoted to fostering art in the Third Reich. However, Hitler's dream of creating the great art of the Third Reich was not realized; rather, artworks were kitsch, mediocre, and megalomaniacal works that were sublime and ridiculous. Nevertheless, it is just as reasonable to reconsider such negative aesthetics as to reflect on Hitler's anti-Semitism. How thoughts about beauty, a core human value, can be linked to evil is one of the most important questions for aesthetics to address. It is necessary to consider the processes whereby thoughts about beauty collude with politics, leading to some of the worst consequences in history. Taking into account the history of German aesthetics from the latter half of the eighteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century, this paper will attempt to re-explore Hitler's view of art. First, his views and their origins and progressive distortion are discussed, followed by an examination of the relationship between art and politics in Hitler's thought.
