This paper aims to elucidate the effects of the game meat (called jibie in Japanese, borrowing from gibier in French) business to the local hunting (and other related) practices in a village adjacent to Kyushu Mountains. We focus on the three hunters in the study community and describe how each understood the transformations and reacted to them. Based on the observations during the fieldwork, we propose the concept of jibie-ification, which stands for the processes in which the meat of hunted Shika deer and wild boar turning into what people call jibie through bundles of practices, bodies, relations, regulations, and instruments to make such processes possible. Recent game meat business tended to be understood as a return to the age-old value of not wasting the meat of dead animals. However, in reality, they are rather agents of new changes because they bring rural Japanese communities new sets of practices and regulations of biosecurity. Furthermore, the varying reactions by the three hunters reveal the fact that the jibie workshop as a contact zone does not always bring a unidirectional change from local practices to industrial ones. Rather, we need to pay attention to more subtle interactions between local hunters and new industrial interests.
