メタ言語とは、言語について述べる言語である。「これは喩えです」のように、比喩であることにメタ言語的に言及することはできるが、洒落や言葉遊びを言う際に「*これは洒落です」のように述べることは不適切になる。本論文では、意味の伝達という目的を放棄することを明示的に示す表現がコミュニケーション上不適切であるという語用論的原則を仮定すると、この種のメタ言語的言及が制約される理由が自然に説明されることを論じた。

This paper focuses on a metalinguistic utterance that mentions that the utterance is wordplay, and describes the conditions under which it is accepted. Since wordplay is a type of play, it conflicts with the basic motivation of informative communication. Therefore, usually we cannot refer to the intention directly. However, we can indicate it indirectly with linguistic markers like ‘naanchatte’or word transformation generating sound similarity. Once interlocutors recognize the conversation is play, making a metalinguistic mention of the intention of wordplay is accepted.
