It is well known that the autonomic nervous system controls hemodynamics and target organs' function. Because our ambient environment is changing every moment, our internal conditions are also changing correspondingly. In this report, the author investigated the mechanism and the role of organ-specific changes in sympathetic nerve activities in anesthetized animals under several conditions. For these purposes, comparative observations were made on several types of sympathetic nerve activity, heart rate and arterial blood pressure under the conditions of central or peripheral nervous stimulation. When the peripheral chemoreceptor was stimulated, cardiac sympathetic nerve activity (CdSNA) was decreased with a concomitant change in heart rate (HR). On the other hand, cervical sympathetic nerve activity (CvSNA) was increased and renal nerve activity (RNA) showed more marked increase with a concomitant increase in arterial pressure (AP). When the pressure in the urinary bladder was raised, the activity of the sympathetic nerve closer to the bladder showed more remarkable increase. From the result that carotid arterial flow was increased despite the increased CvSNA, redistribution of blood flow was suggested. When Tofisopam was administered and the hypothalamus was stimulated, CdSNA was increased in association with decreases in RNA and AP. When ischemia of the central nervous system was developed, the duration of increased CdSNA was shortest and followed by RNA and CvSNA, respectively. It was, thus, suggested that each stimulation produced organ-specific responses m sympathetic nerve activity. This mechanism is considered to originate in the central nervous system and to play an important role in the hemodynamic control.
