A consideration on the linguistic disabilities of infantile autism

The language and its allied behaviors (gestural communication, symbolic behavior, and social behavior) of 68 Japanese children diagnosed as autistic were studied in order to investigate the developmental course of language to clarify the nature of the linguistic disabilities of autistic children. By analysis of the language, the following. results emerged: (1) Of the 68 children, 42 children have learned to speak. Eight of these only use one word units. Twenty children use simple sentences, but make many grammatical errors. Four other children use simple sentences without errors, while 10 other children can combine sentences using conjunctions. (2) Deficiency or misuse of pronouns are observed only in the children who have relatively low syntactic abilities. In parallel with the development of syntactic abilities, autistic children acquire the correct usage of pronouns, as normal children do. (3) Except for two problems, i. e. retardation of the acquisition of the usage of interrogatives and the continuance of echolalia even when children have acquired high linguistic abilities, the developmental course of language of autistic children does not differ from that of normal children. By analyzing the behaviors which are allied to language, the following results emerged: (4) Creative play develops relatively early, when compared to the retardation of language development. (5) Imaginary play, the understanding of social roles, and the understanding of the rules in games appear to develop in parallel with the development of language. Using the above mentioned results, the author discussed the nature of the retardation of language development of autistic children.
