Epidemiological studies on lung fluke in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan : Observation on the Incidence of Encysted Larvae of Paragonimus spp. in Geothelphusa dehaani at Yachiyo-cho, Kami-cho and Rokko-Mauntain Streamss

During the period from April 1983 to October 1984, a total of 3,981 freshwater crabs, Geothelphusa dehaani, collected from Yachiyo-cho, Kami-cho and southern and northern sides of the Rokko Mountains in Hyogo Prefecture were examined for the lung fluke. Among the areas surveied, Yachiyo-cho and Kami-cho were those where the invasion of both Paragonimus miyazakii and Paragonimus westermani had been confirmed by the previous epidemiological survey of paragonimiasis in cats. By examining 1,328 crabs collected from 12 localities of Yachiyo-cho and 983 from 13 localities of Kami-cho, the infection rates were 6.9% and 1.1%, respectively. The prevalence rate in second intermediate hosts (crab) was lower than that of final hosts (cat) at each locality. The. dogs and cats which had been experimintally fed with 23 metacercariae were autopsied on the days of 62 to 84 of infection. Subsequently, all of these fulkes were identified as P. miyazakii. No metacercaria-positive crab was found from 641 and 960 crabs captured from the streams at the southern and northern sides of the Rokko Mountains, respectively.
