The response of plasma arginine vasopressin to 14-hour water deprivation in the elderly

The response of plasma argmme vasopressin (AVP) to 14-hour water deprivation was investigated in 54 healthy individuals (61-91 year old ; mean age 75.7 year) and 12 young control subjects (20-29 year old ; mean age 23 year). The plasma AVP values, measured by radioimmunoassay, prior to and after water deprivation were 1.59±0.63μU/ml and 3.21±1.5μU/ml, respectively. In the young group, on the other hand they were 2.3±0.4μU/ml and 8.2±1.3μU/ml, respectively. Plasma AVP levels increased after water deprivation in both groups, but both levels in the old group were significantly lower than those in the young group. Following the water deprivation, the mean ratio of Uosm/Posm in the old group increased up to 1.56±0.51, which was lower than that in the young group showing the ratio above 2.0. The results obtained in this study suggest that the elderly subjects are prone to incomplete diabetes insipidus. This pathological state might contribute to an unfavourable condition in which the elderly subjects are easily led to an electrolyte imbalance and dehydration.
