The Effect of Studying Abroad in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Years on Wages

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of studying abroad in the undergraduate and postgraduate years on wages in Japan. There has been some prior research examining the effect of studying abroad on income from the perspective of the Transnational Human Capital. However, the study analyzing Japan’s case had two problems in terms of methodology: (1) the sample was not collected randomly to ensure that the effect we saw in one location would occur in general, and (2) it did not control for confounding factors that would affect wages with respect to causal inference. Therefore, this study used large-scale national statistical survey data on Japanese workers and estimated the effect of studying abroad on wages, controlling confounding factors, such as the effect of workers’academic background and occupational aspects. Results showed that the workers’ experience of studying abroad for 25 months or more in their undergraduate or postgraduate years increased their income due to the use of English at work. These analyses also confirmed that there is no economic effect on most domestic university students’ experience of studying abroad. Finally, the tocsin to overemphasize the economic benefit of studying abroad was indicated.
